As part of the pack Blizzard has included a Guest Pass, which if your friend likes you enough, he/she will hand to you (I’d suggest taking them a thank you gift such as an energy drink or sweets to help keep them alert during those long hours playing the game). Once the Guest Pass has been acquired, register for a account and navigate to the “” section.
There you will find the Starter Edition download, which you can install and gain instant access to game because you have that Guest Pass. If you don’t have a friend willing to give you a Guest Pass, you can still download the Starter Edition, but you won’t be able to play it for 30 days. By then you may have given in and bought the game, but it’s worth considering waiting if you are still unsure. 30 days from now Blizzard will have probably encountered and fixed 90% of the bugs all the gamers who purchased on day one had to endure. You will get a much less buggy gameplay experience and still have not spent any cash.

As for what the Starter Edition includes: you get to play through Act I of the game up to the Skeleton King. You can’t take a character past Level 13, there’s no access to the Real Money Auction House, and matchmaking is limited to fellow Starter Edition players. Even so, this is just a (free) taster of the gameplay by the end of which you should know for sure if you want to buy the full version.
